About This Converter

Gregorian Calendar:The solar calendar used worldwide, with months and years based on the Earth's orbit around the sun.

Hijri Calendar:The lunar calendar used in Islam, based on the moon's phases. Years are numbered from the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) to Medina in 622 CE.

Note: This converter provides a calculated calendar result. It may differ by approximately one day from a local moon-sighting announcement, so confirm important religious dates with your local authority.

Calendar basics

Understanding the Hijri and Gregorian calendars

What is the Hijri calendar?

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar used in Islamic life and worship. It follows the phases of the Moon, so each month begins when the new crescent is observed or calculated according to a recognised calendar convention. Its twelve months move through the seasons over time, which is why Islamic dates do not stay in the same Gregorian month from one year to the next.

How does the Gregorian calendar work?

The Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar used for most civil and everyday datekeeping around the world. It is based on the Earth’s movement around the Sun and has 365 days in a common year, with an extra day added in leap years. Because it is based on the solar year rather than the lunar cycle, it differs in structure from the Hijri calendar.

Why dates can differ

A Hijri year is shorter than a Gregorian year, so Islamic dates drift through the solar calendar. In addition, different countries or authorities may use slightly different moon-sighting or calculation methods for the start of a month. That is why a date may appear one day earlier or later depending on the convention being used.

Islamic months

The twelve Hijri months

  • Muharram
  • Safar
  • Rabi al-Awwal
  • Rabi al-Thani
  • Jumada al-Awwal
  • Jumada al-Thani
  • Rajab
  • Sha'ban
  • Ramadan
  • Shawwal
  • Dhu al-Qi'dah
  • Dhu al-Hijjah

These months follow the Hijri calendar, and the start of a month can depend on the calculation method or local moon sighting used in a country or community. That nuance is important when checking a date around Ramadan, Eid, or other Islamic observances.

How conversion works

How the Hijri to Gregorian conversion is calculated

The converter uses a calculated Hijri calendar method when translating between date systems. In practice, the tool takes a day, month, and year in one calendar and applies the conversion logic to estimate the corresponding date in the other calendar. This is useful for quick checking, historical lookup, and general planning, but it should be treated as a calculated reference rather than an official moon-sighting ruling.
